Lorenz Engell studied Theatre, Film and Television Studies, French and Italian and Art History at the University of Cologne, receiving his Ph.D in 1988. In the same year he was appointed associate professor at the Ruhr-Universität Bochum for film and television studies. In 1993 he became a Bauhaus Professor in Weimar and in 1996 the founding Dean of the Faculty of Media of the Bauhaus University. Since 2008 he is – alongside with Bernhard Siegert – director of the IKKM.
His areas of research are film and television studies, media history and media philosophy. His current research projects are cinematographic agencies, cinematographic objects and the imaginary of television (collaborative project with the Université Lumière II, Lyon). His latest book project is on the theory of television.
