Samuel Weber

Samuel Weber has been Avalon Foundation Professor of Humanities at Northwestern University since 2001, co-chair of the Northwestern Paris Program in Critical Theory since 2006, as well as Professor at the European Graduate School in Saas-Fee, Switzerland since 2003. Weber graduated from Cornell University in 1960, and then pursued his graduate education at the universities of Yale (with René Wellek), Cornell (with Paul de Man), and Frankfurt am Main (with Theodor W. Adorno). He received his PhD in Comparative Literature at Cornell University in 1971 and completed his habilitation in Comparative and Modern French Literature at the Freie Universität Berlin in 1973. Weber has taught at a number of American and European universities, including the Freie Universität Berlin, the Humanities Center of Johns Hopkins, the Institut de Philosophie at Université de Strasbourg, the Collège International de Philosophie in Paris, and at UCLA. In 2005 he was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and in 2009 he was made Chevalier des Palmes Académiques.
