Visit the Tenement Museum to be part of the enduring stories of the immigrant and migrant experience in 19th and early 20th century New York City!
Through the sponsorship of Wintersession, the German department is inviting you to an excursion to the Tenement Museum of NYC. This trip will connect students with the rich and multi-layered stories of families who emigrated from Germany and Austria to the US during the 19th and early 20th century. The Tenement Museum has curated the histories of families who lived in the Lower East side, allowing visitors to understand the communities they created, the challenges they faced, and the ways they shaped and were shaped by their adopted city and country.
Itinerary for the Day: One group will explore the apartment of the Schneider family and the “beer saloon” they operated in the German immigrant community of “Kleindeutschland,” while the other group will take a walking tour through the neighborhoods where German immigrants first settled, to see how these spaces were influenced by that community and by subsequent immigrant communities as the Germans and Austrians moved on. Following a break for lunch at Café Katja an Austrian restaurant conveniently located on the same street as the Museum, students will swap tours.>
Date: Tuesday, Jan. 16
Bus will leave campus at 8:00 am and return before 8:00 pm.
