"Princeton-in-Leipzig"
The Department of German is collaborating with the Department of Music to create a new summer course (June 1-27, 2025) that combines intensive language study with intensive studies in music history and music performance.
The program will take place annually in June in order to coincide with the annual international Bach-Festival in Leipzig, allowing students to study the music on that year’s festival program, attend and reflect on the concerts together with Princeton Music faculty, develop their own performance skills, culminating in a final group performance. Concurrent with the musical offerings, students will take part in the rigorous language-learning program offered by interDaF, with additional teaching by Princeton German faculty.
Participants will:
- Attend multiple concerts at the annual international Bach Festival in Leipzig
- Study the music performed at the Festival with Princeton Music Department faculty
- Develop their music performance skills through coaching with Princeton faculty
- Engage in daily language study at the InterDaF school, a language program associated with the University of Leipzig, with tutoring by Princeton Germany faculty
- Visit Dresden on a weekend excursion
- Live in apartment-style accommodations (living space, bedrooms, kitchen, bath)
- Have access to city-wide public transportation for the month
- Perform in a group recital in Leipzig
The group will be limited to 12 students (instrumentalists and vocalists), chosen by audition.
A prerequisite for the course will be successful completion of at least one 100-level German course. Sufficiently high scores on the German department’s proficiency/placement test following the program will allow students to skip one or more courses in the 100-level language sequence.
