Andreas Strasser *23

Andreas Strasser joined Princeton’s German Department in 2015. His research interests include theories of aesthetic experience, German philosophy in the 18th and 19th century, psychoanalysis, the relation of literature and violence (especially in the 20th century), and the history of the German petty bourgeoisie and “Spießertum.”

In his dissertation, he explores the Idyllic, “das Idyllische,” as a cultural paradigm in response to catastrophe in post-war Germany. He focuses on works by Ernst and Friedrich Georg Jünger, Theodor W. Adorno, Marie Luise Kaschnitz, and Christa Wolf to investigate the way in which idylls provide models of cultural criticism, authorship, and forms of remembering.

Before coming to Princeton, Andreas studied Comparative Literature, Theater Studies, and Philosophy at Freie Universität Berlin, the University of Edinburgh, and Humboldt Universität Berlin. At Princeton, Andreas is a graduate affiliate of the Program in European Cultural Studies.
