GER 310G: Foundations of Critical Theory: Media and Power

Program location: Berlin, Germany

Course runs from May 26 - June 20, 2025

(Check-in begins May 24 with departure no later than June 22)

The German Department invites you to Berlin this summer to study what the giants of Critical Theory had to say about media and power. The syllabus for the program, which runs from May 26 to June 20, 2025, includes readings by Walter Benjamin, Michel Foucault, Hannah Arendt, and Frantz Fanon, among others. Best yet, the backdrop for the program will be the international metropolis of Berlin, one of the most exciting cultural and political centers of modern Europe. The intensive seminar will be complemented by an extensive program of excursions in and around Germany’s capital city. You will be housed in the excellent apartment-style facilities of Bard College Berlin. All readings, seminar discussions, and excursions will be in English language.

There are no prerequisites for the course and no German is required.

Enrollment through the Global Program System (GPS) begins on November 15, 2024 and ends on January 20, 2025. The program fee for the summer of 2025 is $3,660, and includes all instructional costs, course books, program fees, housing, cultural activities, and daily breakfast.The program fee does not cover any other meals besides breakfast (an expense estimated at $500).

The fee does not include airfare, but, if accepted to the program, the German Department will provide each student with a reimbursement of up to $1,600.00 to be used towards the cost of airfare.

Students who receive financial aid are eligible to apply for funding for summer study abroad through the Dean’s Fund. If you are eligible for funding through the Dean’s Fund, you must apply in SAFE (Student Activity Funding Engine) and select the opportunity titled “Deans Fund for International Faculty-led Programs”. Funding

To request funding for your participation in PIB, you must also submit an application in SAFE for a Deans Fund award before the January 20th deadline.

  1. To request funding for your program fee of $3,660 from the Deans Fund, you must submit an application to the Student Activities Funding Engine (SAFE).
  2. On the same application in SAFE that you submit your request for funding from the Deans Fund, you must also submit your request to receive the travel subsidy of up to $1,600. A copy of your airline receipt must be attached to the application and your travel information must be entered in Enroll My Trip.

Please note: For summer courses taken for credit, the Office of Financial Aid offers aid recipients student loans to help meet the costs of summer courses. Princeton in Berlin satisfies these criteria.
